It Doesn’t Matter
The next article in this series is about understanding another simple solution that can be used in our daily life. Though it may sound simple, yet applying this solution and mastering this in small situations would help in facing bigger issues in the later part of life. This will further help us in moving towards a solution-oriented life rather than problem focused one.
In today’s competitive world, almost everyone lives a stressful life. Even a small issue makes us unhappy. We are always gripped with some or the other problem that seems to lead to one long sorrowful life. Not only that but for the most part, we feel it’s only logical to experience that unhappiness when faced with problems.
With such logical reasoning, we find it impossible to be happy in all situations. We are clear that whether in office or at home or in our relationships, there exist negative situations that trigger unhappiness. With all this around how can one be happy in all situations. It’s easier said than done.
But the fact is that if you wish to be happy in all situations, you can do so by all means. That is because happiness is your essential nature. Everybody wants to be happy at all times, in all situations. But when you find yourself getting stuck in certain situations, you also discover that you’re not happy.
We say that life is complicated. But on the other hand, the most complicated things have the simplest solutions and that’s the beauty of life. There’s a simple phrase that can play a vital role in retaining happiness in our life. If only we allow it, regardless of the circumstances we find ourselves in.
“It Doesn’t Matter.” This is one of the simplest solution or key to unlock a happy life. IDM is the acronym that can be used for this phrase.
You may dismiss them as three trivial words, but by doing so you’d be dismissing one of the valuable passwords that can lead you to happiness. Using this password with the right understanding will help you to accept every negative circumstance without suffering. Thus, whenever you accept any negative situation, it means you have made use of the IDM password.
So how do we use this password to unlock the inner peace and happiness? Here’s an example that will help you to understand how to apply this solution: When someone ridicules you, you feel bad. But the moment you say, “It Doesn’t Matter,” you’ll stop feeling bad about it or at the very least, you’ll feel some relief. The larger picture could be that you’ll be able to accept the other person’s behavior.
Whenever you don’t like someone’s response, you naturally grumble, “Why didn’t he respond properly? Why does he always have to act that way? I’ll get him back and he better watch out.” You resist the situation.
However, the moment you say, “It Doesn’t Matter”, you become open to accepting the other person’s behavior and your mind becomes clear. You gain a new perspective.
When we resist a situation, it’s like building banks along the river of unhappiness. This in turn deepens the river. When the banks of resistance are removed, the river of unhappiness dissolves in the ocean of acceptance.
Another way to understand this is; whenever you refuse to accept the suffering in any situation, you create a bank for it, accumulating more suffering. And when we accept the suffering by saying, “It Doesn’t Matter”, we do not let a bank build up, rather allow the suffering to get washed away.
The second point is when we accept our suffering using IDM, it’s like placing the situation in a magic box of acceptance. There’s only one way you can create a solution to a problem. And that’s to place it in the magic box of acceptance. You accept the situation which then allows you to open up and think creatively.
Many of the greatest scientists and inventors have used this method. While they were trying to solve a problem which seemed to have no solution, they placed the problem in the magic box of acceptance. As a result, their mind would become free and they would suddenly find a solution. The solution would come to them in the shower or while bathing.
The moment you place the issue, a problem in the box, it begins to change. Your mind, whether you realize it or not, then recites the password IDM. Between these two events, a new way of solving the problem begins to emerge. Your mind still works on the problem, but now it does so in the background. The moment you resist that problem, your mind shuts down, it simply refuses to work on it. The beauty of the IDM password is that you’ll avoid that whole “getting upset over it” stage. You’ll no longer be bogged down by the trivial matters of your day-to-day living.
The IDM password is an even more valuable tool should you ever be hit with a major crisis. The key to making it work though is to accept the situation while trying to find solutions to the problem.
This will help you to keep a stable state of mind. Your mind will “melt away” any and all resistance that occurred because of another person’s negative behavior. And in that state, it will be free from the suffering and will look for solutions.
When you make use of the IDM password, you’ll notice that those situations no longer affect you. And in this way, you’ll remain happy even in negative situations.
